"The Hangover" and the Age of the Jokeless Comedy
I am a huge Apatow fan but this is a great article nonetheless.
“The films of Phillips and Apatow arrived as an antidote to tired, mechanistically joke-driven comedies, like the reference-packed “Scary Movie” clones. But their movies wound up acting as a kind of comedic nerve gas, wiping out joke-comedies en masse.”
A conversation I’ve had a lot, now in convenient article form. I have nothing against the Apatow/Phillips sensibility, but I do wish that other forms of comedies were allowed to exist right now. These things go in waves, and I think I’m ready for the next wave.

To be fair, Apatow/Phillips are less to blame than Friedberg/Seltzer. They’re the nerve gas. They’ve created a hostile, unsafe environment for gag-based comedy, in which any audience member out of high school dismisses parody films sight unseen.

Oh god, right? I watched the Freaks and Geeks pilot last night and I was just shocked, because I’d always been told I’d love this ur-comedy, and I felt like “what happened to the comedy?” I got more laughs out of the “drama” Veronica Mars.
